Playing 1-6 back to back you really appreciate how much of a leap forward 6 was. Like when I was playing 5 I was thinking "Damn I'm really enjoying this, this is easily as good as 6" and then 6 rolled up and naw man, 5 wishes. All it took was the confidence to stop ripping off dragon quest's look and the devs were unchained. There's a *lot* that doesn't work, fuck the veldt etc, but god damn what a game.

Pixel Demaster Very classic game, and not a great remaster imo. The sprite work looks worse to me than the SNES era, which is probably the most damning thing you could say for a remaster. The font is a disaster -- I can't believe there are two options (traditional and modernized), and traditional looks like an anorexic half-dead version of "modernized." Yes there are font mods, but shouldn't a text heavy RPG spend…
