How it works

WTP?! picks from games you already own. Here is what it looks at, what your answers change, and what it keeps.

How a pick happens

  1. 1

    Your library

Every game you own, with your hours, when you last played and how far in you are.

  2. 2

    What fits tonight

Games that can’t work right now drop out: not playable on your Deck, no controller support for the couch, not started when you want to keep going, already finished.

  3. 3

    A shortlist of about forty

The rest are scored on the signals below, and the shortlist is kept varied so near-identical games or one tier can’t take every slot.

  4. 4

    Three to five WTP picks

An AI model (Claude, by Anthropic) reads the shortlist with your taste and answers, picks the best few and says why for each. If it can’t answer, the top scores are used and the page says so.

What the questions change

How long do you have?
Shapes the kind of session that fits. Thirty minutes favours games built for short drop-in sessions; an evening or a weekend favours games you settle into.
What are you in the mood for?
Matches the game’s Steam tags against the mood: chill, story, challenge, action, or something weird.
How much commitment?
Something short only offers games with a known length. Keep going only offers games you’ve started. Something big leans toward long games.
Where are you playing?
Steam Deck keeps Verified and Playable games. Couch keeps full controller support. With friends keeps online co-op or multiplayer games the friends you choose also own.
Comfort zone?
Familiar sticks close to what you already play. A bit different and Surprise me move weight from your usual taste toward tags you rarely play.

Why a game ranks high

Every pick shows these as bars, so you can see what carried it.

Matches what you play
Built from your hours: tags in games you finish or live in count for them, tags in games you drop count against. Recent play counts more.
Fits the mood
How strongly the game’s tags match tonight’s mood.
Fits your time
How the game’s length and session shape fit your answer.
Players rate it
Steam review score, adjusted so a few glowing reviews don’t beat thousands of good ones.
Waiting in your backlog
Games you haven’t started rank highest, then ones you only tried. When you want to keep going, it flips to games you’re partway through.
New ground for you
How far the game sits from your usual tags. Weighted up when you ask for something different.

Steering the picks

  • Not that one drops a pick and fills its place.
  • More like this pulls the next picks toward that game.
  • Shorter and longer lean on game length.
  • Something different turns up the new-ground signal.
  • Signed in, Not for me keeps a game out of your picks for 30 days, and a game you saw this week but didn’t answer ranks a little lower next time.

Play states

Each game you own sits in one of these, worked out from your hours and the game’s main-story length. Finished games are never picked; lived-in ones only when you ask to keep going or stay familiar.

Never started
No playtime at all.
Tried
Under an hour, or under a tenth of its length, and not touched in the last month.
Playing
Played in the last 30 days, or real time put in within the last 90, and not finished.
Finished
Played at least as long as its main story.
Lived in
Three times its main story, or 100 hours in a game with no fixed end.
Dropped
Real time put in, then nothing for over 90 days.

Tiers

Steam has no budget field, so tiers are a rule of thumb over reach, tags and publisher, checked in this order. Old big games with few Steam reviews can land a tier low.

Obscure
Fewer than 500 Steam reviews, whoever made it.
Indie
Players tagged it Indie on Steam.
AAA
A major publisher and at least 5,000 reviews, or 50,000 reviews from anyone.
AA
Everything else: mid-size studios and publishers.

Getting your games in

  • Steam profile link: paste it on the home page. Your profile’s Game details must be public in Steam’s privacy settings.
  • Sign in through Steam: the same import, saved to an account, with pick history and your profile.
  • GOG, Epic, consoles and others: add games by name on Beyond Steam, or upload an export from GOG Galaxy or Playnite.

What we keep

  • Without an account, your imported library is kept for 24 hours, then deleted.
  • With an account, your games, hours, picks and feedback are kept until you delete the account in Settings.
  • Sharing with Steam friends is off until you turn it on. Then friends who also share see your shelf, recent and most-played games and taste tags, and you see theirs.
  • Your history can feed shared statistics; you can turn that off in Settings. Friends’ game lists are read only for a pick and cached for a day.
  • The full details are in the privacy policy.
