I couldn’t get past level 5 until I figured out that the towers could be upgraded. That actually changed everything a lot. At first, nothing worked — I didn’t even know about this mechanic, and the early levels seemed almost impossible. Once I unlocked the upgrades, it got a bit easier. But I still can’t always hold the city: the towers react slowly, and their attack speed just can’t keep up with the enemy waves in…

Meh. Only a few towers, and some fairly useless one shot items. There's a handful of enemy types, but with the exception of the flying explody enemy the diffience is mostly just sprite, walk speed and hp. These wouldn't be deal breakers but the problem is, you get thrown into the first level with no explanation and have to stumble through things, and it's fun as there's a challenge.
