Never in a Trails game I have felt the need to recommend one. You need to play the previous games before this? My answer would be yes. But Cold Steel III takes everything that makes Trails games work.. and dials it up to 200%. And then has in my opinion one of the most jaw dropping final acts in a JRPG I have enjoyed. NOTE. I am writing this as I finish the game, so I might be still on the hype of the ending.

Welp, joke's on me for starting with the Cold Steel games. 1 and 2 seemed like it had a little bit of previous games but Cold Steel 3 heavily draws from games I haven't played yet. Not complaining since I did it to myself but as a warning to anybody who may read this, start with Trails in the Sky.
